The United Fund of Talbot County

Improving Lives Through Gifts of the Heart

Our Commitment to A Vital Community

Since its inception in 1955, the United Fund of Talbot County has worked to enrich the lives of local residents through philanthropy and volunteerism, raising and distributing over $12 million to deserving local health and human services non-profit organizations.  Our mission is to excel as a strictly local philanthropic organization that involves Talbot County residents and raises funds to meet the human services needs of our community that are underfunded– including the developmentally disabled, families in crisis, the victimized and abused, the elderly and frail, the impoverished and needy, and youth.

Joining Together to Give New Hope

We are not the United Way. The funds we raise enable the local agencies we support to provide essential services to thousands of local individuals and families with very real and often critical needs in our community.  The United Fund of Talbot County relies on the commitment and contributions of its generous donors, its dedicated corps of volunteers, and its hardworking board of directors.  Together, we strive to improve quality of life by building a stronger, healthier and more sustainable community for all.

Our Dedication Spans Decades and Continues Today.

The United Fund of Talbot County was founded in 1955 by local humanitarians, including J. McKenny Willis, Jr. and Morgan B. Schiller, who were concerned about the needs of the growing number of community service agencies and the duplication of their fundraising activities. These community leaders and other top civic-minded individuals sought to consolidate those efforts in the county under a single umbrella -The United Fund of Talbot County.  The first campaign was held in 1956 for the benefit of 11 participating agencies with a goal of $89,000.  Today, the number of member agencies stands at 22, with a 2006-07 campaign goal of $600,000. Funds awarded to participating agencies are used for both general operating expenses and specific programs that help shape people into good citizens who care about their community, their families and themselves.

These agencies touch many different segments of our community, helping the developmentally challenged realize their potential; providing our youth with tools for life, inspiring hope for those in need, educating families and individuals on how to succeed, helping the elderly maintain independence, and providing compassionate representation for the abused and victimized.

And Helping Them Grow

By providing these agencies with the financial resources to administer their programs and services, the United Fund helps them to grow, so that ultimately they are strong, viable organizations that hopefully someday outgrow our support.  Memorial Hospital, the Talbot County Free Library, the YMCA, and others have ‘graduated’ from United Fund support, making room for the next generation of agencies in need.
